I am a recent high school graduate and I am currently seeking a teaching degree in Mathematics for High School level math. I have always loved teaching ever since I can remember and Math has always been my favorite subject. I am looking forward to teaching a class of my own someday!
My Teaching Philosophy:
I desire to teach so that I can make the subject of math enjoyable for all students and change the norms that they may hear or face when they talk about math. I will make sure that every student understands the concepts being taught. If a student does not understand how to complete a problem the first time, I will spend the time outside of class needed to help that student achieve greatness. In order for every student to understand the concepts being taught, I will not skip steps in the math problems that we do in class. I will also make sure to give lots of practice to help them learn the concepts for themselves and not do just a lecture on the subject. A goal that I have in my teaching is that math will become fun for more and more students and not a subject that they hate or have a hard time with.
I believe that the purpose of education is to better understand the world and to learn how to succeed in the day to day challenges that someone will face.My role as an educator is to teach students the material that they will need in order to achieve success in school and beyond school. I believe that every student should know the current standards that are set by the government and beyond that in order to achieve in life. I will make sure through my teaching that each student is ready to take on the next course material that is in their path of study or future.
I believe that there should not be boundaries that separate students and make them unequal because of race, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, or any other diversifying trait. In order for students to be treated equal, I will treat them with all with the same respect and understanding as I would with anyone else I work with or talk to. I will not disrespect any culture or race or gender or other trait that a student might identify with and embrace that quality because I believe those traits make up who that student is. For my classroom, I define my community of learners as people that want to further their development in life by learning how a subject works like math or what a subject entails like United States History. My community of learners will learn all that they need to in order to succeed in life and the paths that they might choose.
I believe that students learn through solving problems and learning how to complete them for the next time that they face that similar situation or problem. In order for that learning process to be accomplished, I will make sure that my students are ready for any kind of math problem that they may face in their jobs or lives when they leave my classroom. For my classroom, I will make sure every student focuses in class and make sure that they understand the problems set before them so that they can take them on in their future. For teaching, I will show the classroom multiple examples of what they will see on tests and quizzes and then have them practice on their own with some practice problems. If they have any questions, I will help explain to them what they need to understand in order to solve the problems that they work on correctly. For the curriculum that I teach, I will follow what the state that I teach in states that each child should learn by the time they go through my class and go above and beyond that by teaching them real world situations where they will have to take on the problems they learn in class. For assessments, I will have tests and quizzes throughout the semester or school year using problems that I know my students will know how to accomplish without difficulty but make the problems challenging enough that they will remember what they learned. If there are students that, after I teach the concepts, still do not understand the problems being taught, I will spend time with them outside of class and help them better understand how each concept works and how to solve each type of problem. My goals for my students are that, by the end of the semester or school year, students will have the knowledge to be able to solve any type of problem that will come up in the subject that they have learned.
In order to bring global awareness to my classroom, I will use real world situations to create math problems based off of what is going on in the world to have my students learn both how to complete the problems at hand, and know the current world news at the same time. My relationships with the community will be strong and inspiring so that people will want their students to follow my example by the way that I teach my students and accept that I may be different, but that I am not more different than anyone else. My relationships with the parents of my students will include sending them progress checks quarterly through each semester so that they can know how their child is doing and let them know what they should do at home to succeed and excel in my classroom. My relationships with my teaching colleagues and administration will be very similar but are partially different from each other. My relationships with my teaching colleagues will be formal yet friendly in order to allow myself to learn from older teachers and in turn teach others how I teach my students in the future. While my relationships with the administration will be very respectful and understanding for the decisions that they make for the school or for anything related to the school system.
